Indoor air pollution

While you rightfully keep whining about the increasing air pollution, smog and health hazards due to it, have you ever wondered that the air you breathe inside your house is most likely polluted as well? Most people avoid breathing freely outside the house because of the pollution, they prefer windows up in their cars, traveling by metros or air conditioned buses over regular trains and buses and so on mainly to avoid breathing the pollution ridden air, without realizing that they escape into their houses that are more, if not equally air polluted through different sources.

Experts and doctors strongly claim that in almost each and every house, the indoor air quality is worse than the outdoor air quality, but I seriously believe that Delhi off late stands as an exception to this claim. There are so many potential sources of air pollution in every room within your house but on the brighter side, there are solutions to it all.

The pollutants found outdoor even hang around indoor and combined with other irritants, they can affect the health of the family adversely over time. Fumes from combustion, gas appliances allergens from pets, house dust mites and even mold are a few examples. Your machinery such as ovens, water heaters, stoves, refrigerators etc release a few particulates and gases into the air. The symptoms of bad air include sore throat, watery or itchy eyes, coughing, tight chest, asthma attacks, shortness of breath. If the air quality in your house is uncontrolled over a period of time or if its too bad, the symptoms would be frequent headaches, prolonged everlasting cold, chronic asthma and bronchitis.

A few ways to rectify the air pollution issue within your house apart from keeping it clean and uncluttered include the following:

– Ventilation: There needs to be enough ventilation in your house for fresh air to come in and old stale air to escape. Sunlight is literally the single most important factor to consider when buying a house or moving into a new one. You need to have ample sunlight inside the house since it prevents diseases and is a natural disinfectant. It’s so important that you can legitimately consider moving your house if you don’t receive ample sunlight in your current one.

– Air conditioning: In summers don’t feel too guilty about keeping the air conditioner on, because on a positive note it cleans your air out. Most pollutants are water soluble and your air conditioner removes the water from the atmosphere thereby removing the pollutants along with.

– Filters: While it is not clear how effective the electric air purifiers are, they definitely make a difference but there is no standard measurement as far as their effectiveness is concerned. You could opt for high efficiency particulate air filters instead that are disposable filters that make the air conditioner more effective. You could even opt for a stand alone HEPA filter in case your want to purify each room or a small house.
